Villanova rises in polls

I haven't spent a lot of time this year worrying about Villanova's rank in the ESPN/ USA Today coaches' poll and Associated Press poll, mainly because early-season rankings are fairly meaningless.

With conference play fast approaching, however, and fall-semester finals underway, now seems as good a time as any to take notice of the rankings.

The new ESPN/ USA Today coaches' poll ranks Villanova 16th. Villanova is at the 20th spot in the updated AP media poll.

Fellow Big East members Georgetown, Pitt, and Marquette are ahead of the Wildcats in both polls.

Should Villanova win its next four games (Columbia, La Salle, Depaul, and Pitt), the Wildcats will easily crack the top 10 or higher.

Where do you think they'd be ranked had they not lost to NC State? Probably top 15 in both polls. It won't matter, though, if Jay can't get this team playing D.

Pete,
If nova wins those next 4 it is unlikely they will end up in the top 10. Only one is a "real" team being pitt and pitt will probably lose to Duke because they always choke against good teams further lessening the quality of the win.

12-1 with wins over pitt and 2-0 in the big east and 3-0 in the big 5, that should get us into the top 10... no use arguing about it though, since it hasn't happened yet, and it's all speculation.

Our schedule is either great luck, or great planning....

I don't know how much control Jay has over the schedule, but I don't think he would change a thing if he could.

You are right. The bad games that they've played have fortunately been against mediocre teams.

Man I hope reke goes to Nova. Nothing would stop that team from a championship season.

The weak schedule this year is racking up the wins, but the RPI won't be great. Success in the Big East will be critical - don't want to be last year's Syracuse come tourney selection time.

We'll be a lock if we go 9-7 in the Big East, but Nova should be able to go at least 10-6, maybe 11-5.
