'Nova still ranked after loss

Even after going 0-1 last week with a defeat to a Cincinnati team with a losing record, Villanova did not fall out of the national college basketball top 25 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll.

Villanova fell to #21 in the coaches' poll, down from #17 last week.

The rankings from the Associated Press poll of sportswriters are not yet available, but that didn't stop CBS SportsLine from incorrectly publishing last week's poll as current. (Note the misleading update time of "01/14/2008" at 13:01 EST.")

Update: As GreyCat mentioned in the comments, Villanova dropped all the way to #25 in the AP poll.

I know every year people speak of parity in college sports, but this season there seems to be a large class of teams who are good but not great. Villanova appears to fall in this group.

Other than the dominating Memphis, UNC, Kansas, and UCLA teams, the college basketball pecking order seems especially up for grabs this season after the first two weeks of conference play.

The AP came in a short while ago and Villanova is clinging to the #25 spot (thank you Vinny Pezzimenti where ever you are...).

The 'Cats have two very good opportunities this week to make their case to the voters...the DePaul rematch is coming up on Wednesday. And then a trip to the Dome on Saturday, for that elusive road win.

To me this says that voters aren't really watching very many games. Or maybe college basketball teams this year just aren't that great.

Villanova is not playing like a top 25 team, most likely because they aren't one. They aren't delivering on expectations, and that may be because of coaching.

There, I said it: Jay Wright is a good recruiter, but he's not a very good coach.

Joe Lunardi has moved 'Nova from an 8 or 9 seed to a 12 and has them as one of the last four in. I know it's early & all, but we should be moving in the other direction.

Why the sense of impending doom in some of you guys? Good grief. I sincerely hope the team doesn't read these comments after a tough loss on the road.

Instead of enjoying the national recognition that comes with being a top-25 team, there have been comments since the pre-season here that make it clear some of us are just waiting for failure so you can say, "see, I knew we weren't that good."

We're all entitled to our opinions and predictions, and I for one can't wait until this team proves all the nay-sayers wrong.
