Foye likely to be traded to Wizards

[Let's Go Nova is on summer break, but we will continue to update for important breaking news.]

According to an ESPN report, former Wildcat Randy Foye will be traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Washington Wizards in a deal that includes the 5th pick in Thursday's draft.

Says ESPN:

The Washington Wizards are close to a deal that would send the No. 5 pick in Thursday's draft, Oleksiy Pecherov, Etan Thomas and Darius Songaila to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Randy Foye and Mike Miller, a league source told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher on Tuesday. [...] The trade hasn't been consummated yet because of a clerical point that Etan Thomas needs to handle, a source told Katz.

According to the ESPN Magazine report, the trade will probably become official tomorrow, one day before the draft.

The trade would bring Foye, a Newark, N.J. native, back to the East Coast. Foye was drafted by Minnesota after his senior season at Villanova in 2005.

Lowry traded to Rockets

Point guard Kyle Lowry, who was a major star at Villanova during the 2005 and 2006 tournament runs, has been traded from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Houston Rockets, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

At Houston, Lowry will get to play with superstars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, at least once McGrady recovers from knee surgery. Playing for the Rockets might also allow Lowry to make his first trip to the NBA playoffs.

Lowry will join his former assistant coach Brett Gunning in Houston, who left the Villanova for the Rockets last summer. Gunning is Houston's director of player development.

The Rockets' modern methods of player evaluation and statistics-derived strategy were showcased in an excellent cover story by Michael Lewis in the New York Times Magazine last Sunday.

The Grizzlies receive a first-round pick from playoff-bound Orlando in the three-way deal. Orlando gets point guard Rafer Alston from Houston to fill in for the Magic's own injured all-star point guard, Jameer Nelson from St. Joseph's.

According to Stein, Houston will also receive Brian Cook from Orlando and possibly more players to round out the trade.

Greek hoops god bestows his image unto humanity

In the beginning, there was only the legend of Apollo Fraser, an oral tradition of stories passed down through generations.

Grandfathers would recount tall tales of pump fakes in a conspiratorial whisper, while children sat in awed reverence, conjuring this mythical hero in their minds' eyes.

Now, there is a photograph.

The human form of Apollo "Jason" Fraser will take his pump-fake-themed act to Broadway on Friday when the Globetrotters play two games at Madison Square Garden in a morning-night doubleheader.

The fake basketball team will spend Valentine's Day in romantic Newark, N.J.

Jason Fraser to teach brave inner-city team the true meaning of basketball

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com
1/15/2009 01:23:00 AM

Just when you thought the Jason Fraser saga couldn't get any stranger!

When we last heard about Fraser, he had broken his finger on a solo practice dunk and was flying home to America.

Before that, he was dominating the New Zealand basketball scene while playing for a parking garage branded with AOL-speak.

Well that's all in the past! Jason Fraser is now back in the United States, and will join one of the most prestigious basketball teams in the country.

Greg Cerillo, coach of Fraser's former New York Wizards team, explains:

The New York Wizards are pleased to announce that two of their former players have signed to play with the Harlem Globetrotters. Amityville and Villanova standout Jason Fraser will be appearing for the Globetrotters as Apollo Fraser at events throughout the country. [...] The loss of both these players is big to our club yet the pride we feel in their accomplishments and in what they are doing offsets any personal loss to our Team (sic).

Jason is even listed on the Harlem Globetrotter Web site under the frightening Hellenic moniker "Apollo Fraser." It's practically Facebook-official!

Yes, Apollo "Jason" Fraser, the former Villanova center who was once ranked #1 in the nation in high school, has joined the Harlem Globetrotters.

Fraser will wear the number-42 jersey in an apparent tribute to Frank Tchuisi.

At press time, it is unknown how the Globetrotters will incorporate Fraser's amazing ability to pump fake, travel, and commit a three-second violation all in the same possession into their crowd-pleasing repertoire.

One thing's for sure: the old water bucket-filled-with confetti gag is going to suffer if Fraser pump fakes three times before throwing it.

Crowds roar at Hoops Mania (full recap)

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com
10/29/2007 02:25:00 AM
CNN.com-style "story highlights":
  • Hoops Mania now extremely popular.

  • Video messages from Vitale, ex-VU-stars thrill crowd.

  • Men's basketball team performs dance numbers.

  • Million-dollar prize nigh impossible to win.

  • Blue-White scrimmage a serious affair; full-contact hits and tenacious defense.

  • Corey Fisher: Kyle Lowry with a better shot?

  • Rapper "Mims" explains why he is hot.

  • Bill Raftery: "I regret nothing" about 2005 UNC-game broadcast (A-Ray travel call).

The annual "Hoops Mania" pep rally for Villanova basketball has come a long way in just a few years. Though five years ago it was a modest affair in the Jake Nevin Field House, the event now regularly fills the 6,500-seat Pavilion.

This year's revival of the growing tradition did not disappoint; the packed house was treated to a cavalcade of celebrity guests, dramatic highlight reels, and valuable prize giveaways, all before the main event: the Blue vs. White intra-squad scrimmage.

Anticipating something special after last year's surprise performance by the rapper 50-Cent, students lined up in steady rain three hours before the scheduled 7:30 p.m. start time. By the time doors opened at 6:30, the line had stretched from the Pavilion's entrance at the nadir of Ithan Avenue all the way up the hill, nearly to the Lancaster Avenue intersection.

When doors opened, the student-section in the South stands quickly spilled over with enthusiastic fans, and students streamed into the East and West chair-back seats. The North stands were closed, replaced by a giant projection video screen.

Several Villanova recruits were in attendance. I saw Dexter Strickland sitting a few rows behind me, and there were rumors that mega-recruit Tyreke Evans was also in the building.

Festivities got underway with a three-point contest between two teams each made up of one men's basketball player and one women's player. In the contest, Shane Clark shot 5 of 13, and Dwayne Anderson was 6 of 14 from behind the arc.

Following the three-point contest was a long, detailed video message from Dick Vitale played on the giant video screen. An amazing highlight reel was also shown, splicing scenes from the previous season with Rocky-like montage shots of the Wildcats working out. The entire video was set to Kanye West's "Stronger," which was played at four different points in the evening, incidentally.

The video also featured cameo messages by various Villanova athletics celebrities, including Kyle Lowry, Randy Foye, Ed Pinckney, and Brian Westbrook.

Next came the official introduction of the the team. By my ear, the loudest cheers were for Scottie Reynolds and Jay Wright, but each player received an enthusiastic ovation. The players made their way down the South stands and into a line near center-court.

Once the entire team had been introduced, the sound system started laying down some funky beats, and the entire basketball team began rhythmically gyrating in a manner reminiscent of the performance by the Villanova Dance Team just minutes earlier.

The team's performance, which lasted several songs, was one of the more disturbing things I've ever seen; perhaps befitting a night that would end for many with Halloween parties was the eerily frightening image of Andrew Ott shaking his pelvis suggestively in time with song.

Nevertheless, the dance performance was a hit with the students, and the proper dance team soon joined the players for the final song.

Throughout the event, many prizes were given away in various familiar "timeout contests," such as Villanova's takes on the Price is Right and Let's Make a Deal. One student won a guaranteed seat at every home game this year; another won tickets to the Eagles-Cowboys football showdown next week at Lincoln Financial Field.

The biggest prize of the night, however, was $1 million cash. The randomly selected student had to perform a feat that I would wager no one in the arena that night could come close to achieving: to win the million dollars, he had to make 5 three-point baskets in under 25 seconds, including at least 1 three pointer from each baseline and 1 at the top of the key. Furthermore, only ten shots could be attempted in total.

My quick analysis told me that this was basically an impossible contest. Earlier in the night, sharpshooters Dwayne Anderson and Shane Clark made just 6 and 5 three-pointers, respectively, in more than twice the allotted time (60 seconds) and in more than the limit of 10 shots. What chance did this poor student have to thoroughly outperform Division-One athletes? Indeed, I would have only given Scottie Reynolds, perhaps the best three-point shooter in the Big East, a 1 in 20 chance of successfully completing the challenge.

Needless to say, the student failed to win the million, and in fact did not make a single three-point shot in the 25 seconds, as was to be expected. I must say that contest's rules seemed a little unfair to me considering how heavily the million-dollar contest had been promoted prior to the event. To be fair, the contestant was awarded an iPod Touch for his troubles.

Finally, it was time for the main event. But before the Blue-White scrimmage got underway, Jay Wright introduced the many "coaches" for the Blue and White teams, including the former Villanova forward Marcus "Big Dawg" Austin, the Eagles running back Brian Westbrook, and the National League MVP candidate Jimmy Rollins. The loudest cheers of the entire night, however, were reserved for Curtis Sumpter, who returned to the Pavilion to coach in the scrimmage.

For the scrimmage, the team was divided into two factions of roughly equal strength.

The White team featured guards Corey Fisher and Reggie Redding, forwards Dwayne Anderson and Dante Cunningham, and center Casiem Drummond. A new walk-on by the name of "Russell" wore the #44 jersey for the White team as well, but he has not yet been added to the official Villanova roster Web page.

The Blue team included guards Scottie Reynolds, Malcolm Grant, Jason Colenda and Corey Stokes; and forwards Shane Clark, Antonio Pena and Andrew Ott. Junior forward Frank Tchuisi was out with an arm injury.

Though past scrimmages at Hoops Mania have been alley-oop-fueled jam fests with defense taking a back seat, that was not the case at the Pavilion Friday. The two sides played a serious brand of basketball despite the four 4-minute quarters with a running clock.

Tough defense was played, and a few hard fouls were committed. The White team jumped out to an early lead and never relented, winning by a final score of 28-19.

Several players performed well in the scrimmage, including Dante Cunningham, who looked like a monster in the paint, and Scottie Reynolds, who was the clear leader on the court. Reggie Redding showed some improvement in his offensive game, and Dwayne Anderson impressed the fans and announcers Bill Raftery and Jay Wright with his domination of the glass.

By far the most impressive show, however, was put on by the freshman Corey Fisher, who looked like he was playing at a different speed than everyone else. Fisher drained a pair of threes and dished out several pretty assists. He demonstrated a ridiculous handle, and played lock-down defense on fellow freshman PG Malcolm Grant, who struggled.

Though he was running circles around his teammates, Fisher was also in perfect control for much of the scrimmage. On one broken play with the shot-clock winding down, Fisher rescued a loose ball directed to his general direction, quickly drove to the rack, and dished off to Dante Cunningham for a slam that brought down the house.

Fisher's all-out hustle and ridiculously quick first step immediately reminded me of Kyle Lowry. The one major difference between the two at this stage of development may be the jump shot: Fisher is a significantly better shooter than Lowry, who I consider to be the most talented guard in Villanova history. Whether Fisher's game will live up to Lowry's lofty standards remains to be seen, but it certainly is off to a good start.

After the Blue-White scrimmage, which left several players drenched in sweat, Jay Wright introduced the special musical guest for the evening, the New-York-born rapper Shawn Mims.

Mims performed a few songs, including his #1 hit "This is Why I'm Hot," much to the delight of the now-raucous crowd. Full video of Mims's 7-minute performance is available on YouTube.

Mims's dramatic exit to the Northeast corner of the Pavilion signaled the end of Hoops Mania.

As I made my way out of the East seats, I noticed that the commentator Bill Raftery was standing a few feet away. I said hello to Raftery, then jokingly asked him if he now regrets his on-air defense of Allan Ray's dubious traveling violation during the waning moments of the CBS broadcast of the 2005 Sweet-Sixteen NCAA Tournament game against the eventual champion UNC.

"I regret nothing," said Raftery. "But what a night to bring it up," he added, referring to the ongoing Villanova love-fest at the Pavilion.

Lowry nets game-winner and triple-double for Grizzlies

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com

Kyle Lowry, one of the best guards to ever play for Villanova University, is back in action with the Memphis Grizzlies in preseason NBA play.

Lowry scored 21 points, including the game-winning tip-in, to beat the Houston Rockets 109-107 in double-overtime. He added 12 assists, 11 rebounds, and 2 steals in a dominating performance, notching Memphis's first triple-double of the pre-season.

After showing sparks of brilliant play that had him in the early 2006 rookie-of-the-year conversation, Lowry missed 72 games last season with a broken left wrist.

Update: Video of the amazing finish is available at NBA.com, where Lowry was awarded the play of the day.

Doug West joins coaching staff

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com
10/17/2007 04:25:00 PM
Doug West will return to Villanova as an assistant basketball coach next season, the university announced this month.

West starred for the Wildcats from 1985-1989, and led the 'Cats to an Elite Eight trip in 1988. West is also in fourth-place on the all-time Wildcats scoring record book, with 2,037 points.

After graduating in 1989, West was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves and played nine seasons in the NBA.

West spent last season as an assistant coach for the Duquesne women's basketball team in Pittsburgh.

West said he was excited about the chance to join the Villanova coaching staff:

It's something I have thought about for a long time. I have watched this team up close and from afar. I bleed blue and white and this is a chance for me to contribute in another way. I am very happy to be here.

Villanova head coach Jay Wright praised West's experience and background:

We are thrilled to have another member of the Villanova basketball alumni family join our staff. Doug is a great addition to our staff because of his experience in the NBA and, most importantly, for the pride he takes in being a part of the Villanova basketball program.

Villanova's unusual connection with the state of Minnesota continues: West, a former Timberwolf himself, replaces former assistant and 1985-title star Ed Pinckney, who left Jay Wright's bench this fall for an assistant coaching position on the Timberwolves.

Pinckney will once again coach former Villanova star Randy Foye, a starting guard for the Timberwolves.

Howard Porter, the former Villanova great, was also found murdered in Minneapolis this spring. Porter had been working in Minnesota as a parole officer.

Pinckney leaves for NBA

Villanova assistant coach Ed Pinckney will leave the team to join the coaching staff of the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves, Villanova University announced on Friday.

Pinckney will accept an asisstant coaching position under Timberwolves' head coach Randy Wittman, and will be reunited with guard Randy Foye, who starred for Villanova from 2002 to 2006.

Pinckney earned his spot on the Villanova bench in May 2003, and served as an assistant coach for the Wildcats for four seasons. According to Villanova, Pinckney "was involved in all aspects of coaching, including on-court teaching, recruiting and scouting."

Many fans, however, will miss particularly Pinckney's recruiting prowess.

Villanova head coach Jay Wright said that he was proud of Pinckney for earning the NBA opportunity:

Eddie has made a great impact as a player and alumnus but his four years as a coach were just as meaningful. Eddie became a great recruiter and mentor to our young men. We will miss having him around us every day but we also know that Eddie will remain a great representative of Villanova basketball.

Pinckney led Villanova to the NCAA championship in 1985 before spending 12 seasons in the NBA.

According to Villanova University, a search for the next assistant on Jay Wright's bench is already underway.

Man charged in Porter murder

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com

Second-degree murder charges were filed today against a 29-year-old St. Paul man in the Howard Porter case, according to an AP article available on ESPN.

Rashad Arthur Raleigh was arrested and released in early June before he was charged with the murder of Porter today. He has been in police custody since mid-August on unrelated charges.

The details of the complaint are not pretty for the memory of the former Villanova great. From the AP:

Former Villanova star and Ramsey County probation officer Howard Porter was trying to trade money and crack cocaine for sex with a prostitute when he was beaten to death, according to murder charges filed Tuesday against a St. Paul man.

The AP also reported the criminal complaint filed today described the manner in which Porter was murdered:

According to the criminal complaint filed in Ramsey County District Court, Porter accompanied a prostitute he had picked up on the street to her apartment for a "date." The woman, Tonya Evette Johnson, told police four masked men rushed in to her apartment, threw her to the floor and demanded drugs and money.

Johnson told police the four men beat Porter "real bad, God real bad" and that "there was blood everywhere," the complaint quoted her as saying. Police said they found blood spattered throughout the house.

Porter died May 26 in a Minnesota hospital after being found unconscious and unidentified in a Minneapolis alley.

Widely considered one of the greatest players to ever wear a Villanova uniform, Porter struggled with drug addiction after a seven-year NBA career.

Porter was living in Ramsey County, Minnesota and working as a probation officer at the time of his death at age 58.

Foye working out with NJ high-school team

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com
8/26/2007 02:42:00 AM
Talk about some summer basketball domination: Villanova alum Randy Foye has been scrimmaging with the Rumson-Fair Haven high school basketball team this offseason to prepare for his sophomore campaign in the NBA.

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional, a suburban high school in one of New Jersey's richest communities, may not be used to hosting NBA-level talent. The Bulldogs went 4-16 last season and are looking to build some sort of winning foundation this year, starting with the hiring of new head coach James Young.

Foye, who recently purchased a new home close-by in Rumson, actually approached the school to ask if he could work out in the gym. Amazingly, the rookie coach Young jumped at the chance for his players to run with a rising NBA star, and Foye has agreed to work with the student-athletes to improve their games.

The full article is definitely worth checking out. Foye is extensively quoted, and even addresses the culture clash between the life experiences of Rumson's suburban athletes and his background from a rough neighborhood in Newark:

I saw it in the beginning and addressed it. I don't think it's being "soft," I think it's not having to compete for anything because they've always had everything handed to them. They've never had to compete for a drink of water or compete to have the luxury to get in a car and go somewhere. They don't know what hard work is and don't know what hunger is. Sometimes when they see someone come from where I came from and how it turned out and I explain it to them, then their attitude changes. But these guys are good kids.

Digital Sports also includes a picture in the article showing Randy taking a set shot from 12 feet, straightaway. He must be teaching the kids something there, because that shot does not come up often in the NBA.

Tyreke sets a date

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com
8/07/2007 11:57:00 PM
Tyreke Evans has set a date for his much-awaited decision on where to attend college next fall.

Evans, the highly-recruited superstar guard, will announce his decision on Monday, November 12.

It's my understanding that the story first broke on the Villanova Rivals site; unfortunately I cannot link there, since the site follows the archaic model of forcing people to pay for news and information.

Luckily, Card Chronicle also runs the story, and doesn't want your credit card number.

Tyreke's leaders remain Villanova and Lousiville, with Memphis on the outside looking in. Texas and Connecticut are, at this point, extremely remote possibilities.

Tyreke's comments come one day after an excellent Sports Illustrated article devoted to his summer resurgence back to the ranks of a program-changing, elite talent.

SI's Kevin Armstrong reveals the fascinating fact that Tyreke has been hanging around Villanova, playing pickup basketball with some of 'Nova's best players off campus:

[Tyreke] is back in Pennsylvania, playing pick-up games at Villanova's off-campus practice gym against former Wildcats like Mike Nardi and Kyle Lowry as well as current guard Scottie Reynolds

Anyone else dying to see Reynolds hooping it up with Tyreke? Increasingly, it looks like we will have that chance.

If I were forced to assign odds at this very moment about Tyreke's eventual destination, this is my best guess:

Villanova: 50%
Louisville: 40%
Memphis: 5%
Everywhere else: 5%

More information should trickle in the rest of the summer, but it looks like Wildcats fans will have to wait till November before any official word is given.

Woman released in Porter case

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com
6/05/2007 01:35:00 PM
An article posted today on CBS's WCCO Web site reports that Tonya Washington, the 33-year-old St. Paul woman arrested Sunday in the Howard Porter murder investigation was released and will not be charged at this time.

St. Paul police said that there is insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against Washington. Though there was speculation that Washington and Porter had known each other, no official details have been given.

Authorities also released a man arrested Sunday night in connection with the case who was widely believed to be the current or former boyfriend of Washington. No charges have been filed against that individual.

Though police assured the media that they still had several leads on the case to consider, the release of Washington likely signals that the Howard Porter murder mystery is back to square one, at least for now.

Porter honored amidst murder mystery

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com
6/04/2007 02:54:00 PM
ESPN runs two pieces on the memorial service for Howard Porter. The first piece is a standard AP report on Porter's funeral service in St. Paul, Minn.

According to that article, more than 500 mourners attended the Minnesota funeral on Saturday. Those in attendance included relatives, friends, and former teammates, all of whom praised Porter's life on and off the basketball court.

The second article is from freelance sportswriter Jay Weiner, who gives us more details on the mysterious murder case at the forefront of Porter's tragedy.

According to Weinar, there are scores of unanswered questions about what happened to Porter:

Did Porter voluntarily walk out the house's front door that Friday night and head somewhere to meet somebody or to check on a client on probation?
Or was he forced out?
Did he exit out a side door, toward the garage, to get into a rented Cadillac? Why was the car rented from Enterprise in the days just before his murder?
[...]
Was Porter forced to this narrow street one block from busy Interstate I-94, which connects the Twin Cities to Chicago? Was he beaten here, then transported the 20 minutes by car, past the skyscrapers of downtown Minneapolis, to be dumped in that alley?
Or did the crime occur in Minneapolis, the car abandoned in St. Paul later?

Whether or not we ever get any answers to these questions is anyone's guess.

One thing that is for sure is Porter's great impact on Villanova basketball and on society in general. Two more funerals are planned, one each in Villanova and Florida, to honor Porter.

Porter dies from attack injuries

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com
5/27/2007 03:53:00 PM

The former Villanova basketball star Howard Porter died yesterday from injuries suffered in a mysterious attack last week in Minneapolis.

Porter, 58, was found severely beaten in an alleyway last weekend and was admitted into a hospital as an unidentified assault victim before police were able to verify his identity.

Porter had been working as a probation officer in Ramsey County, Minnesota. Police are investigating as to whether the attack was related to one of Porter's cases. No one has yet been arrested and police have not identified any suspects.

Villanova University issued a statement calling Porter "one of the finest players to ever wear a Wildcat uniform." Villanova retired Porter's jersey in 1997 in the Pavilion.

"The entire Villanova family is saddened by the news of Howard's death," said Villanova head coach Jay Wright.

Wright praised Porter's contributions to Villanova basketball on and off the court:

Howard provided so many Villanovans with thrills on the basketball court playing for Coach Kraft. Since his playing days ended, he has been an outstanding role model for our current players and coaching staff. Howard was a kind, gentle, and humble man who loved his family and Villanova. We will all miss him.

According to Villanova University, funeral arrangements are pending.

Ex-'Nova star Porter fights for life

Howard Porter, one of the all-time great Villanova Wildcats, was found seriously injured Sunday in a Minnesota hospital after apparently suffering from an abduction and brutal assault.

Porter, 58, was reported missing earlier this weekend, but it was not until photos were released by police that he was located Sunday, already in a St.-Paul-area hospital, unconscious and previously unidentified.

According to a source cited by Dana Pennett O'Neil today in the Philadelphia Daily News, Porter "has severe brain damage and might not survive."

Porter had been working in Minnesota as a Ramsey County probation officer. There is no word yet on whether the attack is related to one of his probation cases.

According to a story in the Philadelphia Inquirer, police have no reason to believe Porter suffered a drug relapse. Porter had struggled with cocaine use in the seventies and eighties.

Porter led his 1971 Villanova Wildcats team to a Final-Four appearance and was voted the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player. He played professional basketball in the NBA until 1978.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune runs a comprehensive timeline of Porter's life.

Fraser, injured again, flies home

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com
5/05/2007 12:28:00 AM
Jason Fraser has suffered yet another season-ending injury, this time in New Zealand.

Fraser sustained a broken finger in his left hand in practice while attempting a "casual slam dunk," said John Davey, CEO of the Waikato (New Zealand) U-Park-It Pistons, Fraser's latest professional team.

The injury comes just as Fraser seemed to emerge with a great game last month.

Fraser flew back to the United States last night and is not expected to return to the U-Park-It squad this season.

According to the Stuff.co.nz report, Fraser, "who hails from New York and played his college basketball for renowned Villanova University in Pennsylvania, averaged just under nine rebounds a game, was inside the league's top 10 of field goal shooters and was scoring an average of 12 points per game."

Fraser plays perfect game for "U Park It Pistons"

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com
4/25/2007 01:21:00 PM

Jason Fraser scored 32 points on a perfect 11-11 shooting performance to lead his team to victory this week in New Zealand's National Basketball League.

Fraser, the once highly-touted prospect at Villanova, played arguably his best game since his high school days to pace the "U Park It Waikato Pistons" in a 106-99 win over the much-feared TET Taranaki Mountain Airs -- on the road, no less.

Fraser also had 11 rebounds.

Fraser had arrived on Villanova's campus in 2002 along with future stars Randy Foye, Allan Ray, and Curtis Sumpter, and was expected to be the best player by far of that group. Unfortunately, a failure to develop in the college game and several knee injuries limited Fraser's effectiveness in four disappointing years on the Main Line.

Fraser now appears healthier, and is averaging 7.7 points and 7.8 rebounds for the year in the NBL, according to Basketball New Zealand.

Reynolds: Right now, I'm coming back

posted by Pete @ LetsGoNova.com
3/20/2007 09:54:00 PM

Villanova fans received some excellent news this morning in the form of a Sporting News article about star freshman guard Scottie Reynolds.

In the article, Reynolds is quoted saying he has not even considered making the early jump to the NBA yet. Scottie also says he never talked about the NBA with his family or with Villanova coach Jay Wright.

Says Scottie:

Right now, I'm coming back. I'm not even thinking about it. Of course there are the questions, but right now I'm not thinking about it. I'm ready to take on a new challenge for next year.

While Reynolds could choose to go pro at any time, this statement really lowers the odds that Scottie will forgo his remaining college eligibility this spring.

The article also reveals that Villanova senior Curtis Sumpter will undergo medical testing to determine how reliable his knees are before the NBA Draft, and that senior Mike Nardi has applied for dual citizenship in Italy to play professionally there next year.
