Notre Dame shocks #4 'Bama

It's been a great week for the Fighting Irish. After pulling off the upset at #23 Maryland, Notre Dame came home and absolutely stunned an undefeated Alabama team that was ranked #4 by the AP and #5 in the coaches poll.

After battling the Tide to a 49-49 halftime tie, Notre Dame crushed Alabama in the second half to win 99-85.

Notre Dame is now 7-1, with its only loss coming by 2 points to a good Butler team (currently #15/#14 AP/ESPN, #1 RPI, #2 Pomeroy). The Irish have won six straight, including two victories against ranked opponents, and are putting together a very solid NCAA resume early in the season.

Villanova's Jan. 17 game against Notre Dame at the Pavilion may well be a much bigger battle than anyone anticipated. Unless the poll voters spent this week under a rock, Notre Dame will be in the top 25 in both polls come Monday.
