Cunningham to try for Olympics

According to an article on ESPN.com, Villanova forward Dante Cunningham has been added to the British National Basketball team roster. Several American based basketball players, including Ben Gordon and Luol Deng, have been invited by British officials to try out for the national team for the 2012 Olympics.

Between 15 to 20 British players will attend a training camp later this spring in preparation for September's EuroBasket qualifiers.

Games will be played against Israel, Czech Republic and Bosnia, with the winner of the group qualifying for the 2009 European Championship. In order for the Brits to be allowed to field an Olympic team, they must first qualify for the European Championship, held every two years, by 2011.

This is an exciting opportunity for Dante, as it will give him a forum to continue working on his game in the offseason. If Cunningham makes the team and Britain is able to qualify for the Olympics, it will allow Dante to showcase his skills on a worldwide stage.

Here is to wishing the best for Cunningham and the Brits.

This opportunity will make him a much better player and will greatly benefit our team next year. Lets hope that he plays well!

Wait, I just remembered, what connection does he have to Britain?

His parents were military, most likely he lived there for an extended period of time or they did.

Matching up against some Olympic level talent certainly won't hurt him or our team next year.

Pete -

If Dante makes the team, can you live blog the EuroBasket qualifiers?

I really have no idea, but.....

...considering the ESPN article was posted on April 1, the 2012 Olympic games are still over 4 years away, and until now I'd never heard anything about Dante having any connection to Great Britain, I find this hard to believe.

Also, since when is there a "British" national team in the Olympics? I'm pretty sure "England" and "Ireland" each have their own national teams, and heck maybe even "Scotland" too.

i'm pretty sure as long as one of your grandparents was born in england you can play for the team... that is probably the case for dante

seeya later, dont come back.

dante, clark, redding, drummond, anderson......take a hike, get off out team.

we need the roster slots.

TWO big men, and tyreke evans.

we would have the slots but we have a logjam at the small foward-not that good position

cman is retarted and thinks this would take Dante off of the Villanova team.

And JA is probably the biggest dumbass on these comments and thinks that Great Britain includes Scotland and Ireland.

Probably the dumbest comments I have read in a while on one article.

anyone that says dante and dwayne should be off the team is the idiot. we could use another big guy or two, but we have scholarships open, why would you ever suggest two starters leave? i can't beleive i'm actually arguing this right now that's how dumb of a suggestion that was.

now that it sounds like there is a good chance we might land tyreke, how will this affect dominic cheek's decision?

Guys, for the 1 millionth time, forget Tyreke. We still have a good chance to get Cheek though.

C-man, Cunningham could arguably be our best post presence right now. He is even going to Britain to further improve his game.

i agree with gregg, tyreke in my opinion is done. One guy in his entourage said "we will wait until we find out which current college players declare for the draft." to me, that means deciding between memphis and texas with rose and maybe d.j. heading to the nba
