Kansas wins national title

The Kansas Jayhawks are the national champions after defeating the Memphis Tigers tonight in overtime. Kansas overcame a 9-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to complete one of the most dramatic comebacks in Final Four history.

On Memphis's side, it was an epic collapse. The Tigers had numerous opportunities to seal the game, but could not make free throws in crunch time. Memphis also was unable to even foul Kansas on the Jayhawks' last possession in regulation, when Kansas trailed by 3 with 10 seconds to go.

The Jayhawks' win means that Villanova has lost to the eventual national champions in three of the last four NCAA tournaments: North Carolina in the Sweet 16 in 2005, Florida in the Elite 8 in 2006, and Kansas in this year's Sweet 16.

As far as I could see, Villanova only made two appearances in this year's "One Shining Moment" highlight montage, with both clips showing the Wildcats allowing Kansas dunks via alley-oop.

I wonder how much the Memphis collapse might help push Tyreke to the Main Line - he did say earlier that NCAA performance would affect his choice...Got my fingers crossed until 4/16/08...we could really use that bandit!

If Memphis had just got Malcolm Grant to transfer midseason and gave him minutes they would have beat Kansas. FIRE John Calipari!!! MALCOLM GRANT! MALCOLM GRANT! MALCOLM GRANT!

Calipari probably contributed more to Memphis's loss than his players. I wonder if that influences Tyreke's decision?

John Calipari is an excellent coach. Probably one of the best in the country. Memphis players missed the foul shots, he cant take foul shots for them. Also, all players from Memphis have an extremely low basketball IQ. Calipari is a great coach, but he can't make the decisions for them.

8 more days until Tyreke's announcement.........

Had Malcolm Grant been on the Memphis team, Calipari wouldhave subbed him in for Dorsey in overtime. Malcolm would have stroked 3 after 3 after 3 to take the tigers to the title.

Greg,

How about Calipheri not calling a time out with 2+ seconds left to get a play in, or not fouling at half court when KU bringing the ball down behind by 3 points and 7 seconds left, don't even let them get a three off, make them shoot two fouls. That's a coach and team who have lost track of the game situation. THAT'S NOT A WELL COACHED TEAM.

Calipheri MAY be a good coach, but he did not show it in that game.

Ok, I'm just saying that Calipari is one of the best coaches coaches in the country, and made one costly flaw. He still took Umass and Memphis to the final four, despite the fact that they were previously not even tournament teams.

Had Grant been on the Memphis team, there wouldn't have BEEN an overtime, because he would have won it for them in regulation ... no, actually, had Grant been on the Memphis team, Kansas would have taken one look at him in warm ups and forfeited the game before it even started.
