Tyreke picks Memphis

Tyreke Evans will play college basketball at Memphis, the high school senior announced today at a press conference on ESPNU.

Villanova and Texas were the other two finalists for Evans's college choice.

The cards fell into place for Evans to attend Memphis this week, when the Tigers' star point guard Derrick Rose declared he would enter the NBA draft. Memphis coach John Calipari also agreed to a contract extension, quelling rumors he would jump to the NBA.

Chris Douglas-Roberts, another Memphis guard, is also considering forgoing his final year of college eligibility.

Rose's departure and Roberts likely leaving opens up space for Evans to immediately star for Memphis, which plays in Conference USA.

Losing out on Evans, whom many consider the best player in his class, hurts for Villanova, which adds no new players next year and loses guard Malcolm Grant to Miami.

At the risk of sounding Bitter, He's better off there since he's a ballhog and would rather be at a team where he can run wild for a year, not develop as a complete player and get a 1.22 gpa and still be smarter than 50% at the college

Memphis where FT%'s go to die, Congrats Chok-ipari

I only saw him at the Mcdonald's Game and he was a big time ballhog. Let him go to Memphis(good luck) and play for a coach who was outcoached in his biggest game last year. He can't go left and his jumper is ugly. All hail Dom Cheek.

you nova fans seem bitter. don't worry, that's exactly what illinois said when they lost derrick rose, and look how well he turned out.

Did 'Nova make it to the Championship this year? Will they next year?

I think it's clear why Tyreke picked Memphis.

im a nova fan.. im not really bitter about this.. I was really hoping Reke would come to nova.. I think it would have been the best thing for him, both personally and professionally and it would have been dope for us. but he seems like a good dude so Im not going to talk sh-t on him now cuz he chose memphis.. we still got kids who can play..

Unbelievable hatred and bitterness about a highschool basketball player. Maybe these Villanova fans should just remember the cocaine filled glory days.

Selfish.. what other players hold a press conference for this crap.. do you know what Tyreke said when asked the question "Who do you look up (admire) to most?".. He answered "Me!"

wow..the bitterness here. Reke made his choice and it wasn't nova, time to get over it.

Should we go after Devin Ebanks? Maybe we should make a pitch. A six foot nine inch forward could really help us up front.

Another option could be to check the Junior College ranks to see if a good big man is available.

I don't think we need another guard right now. We have Waayns coming next season and maybe Dominic Cheek if we can succesfully recruit him

i think Ebanks is Memphis bound as well.. him and Evans have talked about trying to play on the same team in college and he is visting them in a min.. good for Memphis..

Lots of bitterness here, and it's expected. You two-faced SOB's would be having an orgasm if Tyreke had decided to attend 'Nova. But since he's going to Memphis, now all of a sudden he's a ballhogging thug who would be exposed in the Big East?? And I guess Jay Wright was outcoached too. At least we kept it close with Kansas instead of letting them wipe the floor with us like the Wildcats did.

I would not want you designing my site if you can't spell "company".. ;) seriously, why is everyone getting all negative in here?

At 5:02 PM, April 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm not mad that tyreke chose Memphis at all, it was his choice and he made it. I do however hate Memphis' program because of its laundry list of outside legal issues that seem to go un-noticed or at least unpunished by the coaches there. COach cal is a very shady character and it is hard not to question or at least wonder about the legality of his recruiting tactics. He has been playing it fast and loose with diciplne there and eventually it will catch up with him.

At 5:11 PM, April 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The negativity started with 'Nova fans choosing to throw insults about low GPA's and fast food restaurants. I grew up in Memphis, graduated in 1989, and I can tell you, Memphis is far from perfect (as is Philadelphia). That being said, most fans would enjoy the kind of success the Tigers have had over the last 3 years.

If Calipari is such an obvious cheater, how come the NCAA hasn't caught him already? They pounced on Kelvin Sampson pretty quick, and it's not like they have a shortage of investigators.

I resent the remarks re. Memphians "banging their cousins" or "fast food shift managers". Yes, we have our problems in this city - but we are no different than any other avid basketball fan. We love our Tigers - just as much as you love your team. Please stop with the silly bitterness. It makes Villanova fans look ignorant. Come to Memphis to visit - just once - and I think your opinion would change.

At 5:18 PM, April 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Being a Villanova fan i'm actually somewhat ashamed about the comments by some of our fans towards memphis fans. Lets not forget that this "argument" started over a kid who chose one school over another, there is no need for attacks on the fans of memphis because they got the kid. While it is kind of obnoxious for memphis fans to come on to a Villanova message board to brag, there's no need for nova fans to sink to that level

When it comes right down to it, we're not that much different. We're all crazy basketball fans. In 2008, Memphis has Georgetown, Syracuse and possibly West Virginia on the schedule. Should be fun.

okay all you memphis fans need to leave this villanova blog, and stop calling is "bitter."

you'd be even just as upset if not even more had tyreke chosen to come to nova. maybe a couple of us have taken it overboard, but you seriously have no business coming here and instigating all this.

anyways, i guess it sucks that tyreke didnt choose us seeing as we would've been absolutely unstoppable had he. That being said, i still think we'll be pretty good if we just keep working hard. Seriously though, we NEED to work on a big man recruit for the year after next. we're gonna be dead without dante dwayne and shane

to the memphis fans.. congrats on evans and congrats in advance on Ebanks.. go nova!! now lets move on to some new sh-t!!

i typically find that people who brag amount "how much they are worth" are usually either (a) full of sh*t or (2) desperately trying to cover up the fact that they have a small d*ck.

Furthermore, I typically find that people who describe themselves as "supa" are in fact, not so "supa".

As for the cocaine fueled glory days, don't kid yourself, everyone was doped up in the 80's.

Congrats on Reke, he is a hell of a player.

His choice will no doubt upset Villanova fans, who had been spurned two years ago by local products Wayne Ellington (North Carolina) and Gerald Henderson (Duke), and had hoped their school would finally land a big fish. "(Villanova coach Jay Wright) told me if I wanted to go one-and-done (to the NBA), I should go to Memphis," said Evans, who dined at the Wright house last week. "If I wanted to be part of a family, I should come to Villanova."

God damnit jay....

Memphis lost a big, local recruit to Coach K this year so we understand some of your frustrations. What you didn't see from our fans after that ordeal is what I am reading on this blog. What a bunch of meatheads. And what makes you think that Villanova is the Harvard of the Big East? The University of Memphis is a solid urban institute. We has nothing to be ashamed of. If your little pea-brain had done any research you would have found that the U of M has solid engineering, law, and business schools and is backed by FedEx.

At 7:38 PM, April 16, 2008, Blogger DaveNJ said...

Oh well. Let's be honest, Tyreke Evans would have upset a pretty delicate balance for this team. Would it be nice to get a player of his caliber? I guess, but we really wouldn't know how to use him. He'd be competing with Stokes, Fisher, Reynolds, and Redding for minutes, when obviously he wants to star. It's no big deal, we have Malik Waayns locked up, and Cheek seems really into Nova, as does Isaiah Armwood. We're a Sweet 16 team with every player and coach returning, that's hard to argue with. Not just that, but the year after that we've got Taylor King, Malik Waayns, and a probable top 20 recruit. Future's looking good for Nova Nation.

At 7:45 PM, April 16, 2008, Blogger pete said...

Dave,

Grant isn't returning. Without Grant, we would have lost the LSU game, would not have been selected as the last at-large bid, and would have been in the NIT.

How can you say we have everyone returning?

This team will be worse next year without Grant... period. We can still get lucky and make a run in the NCAAs, but the team will not have more talent, it will have less.

At 7:50 PM, April 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know that half of you were 10 years old when this occurred, but let's not forget the Tim Thomas debacle the last time Villanova landed themselves a "one and done" type of recruit. It ruined the team, ruined the team chemistry, and effectively ended Steve Lappas' reign as coach of 'Nova (Thank God). Not getting Tyreke, especially if he planned on going pro after one year, is not such a bad thing. We have a strong nucleus for next year. Yes, we need a few more big bodies so that we can play effectively under the glass. Adding Evans to that mix does not help that nucleus. Yes, he might be a talented player, but who is he going to be taking shots from in next years rotation?

At 7:51 PM, April 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pete.

With all of the players, besides Grant, returning, we still have a better team. If you've noticed Dante Cunningham, and many other former Nova players, Foye, Ray, etc. developed greatly over time in the years they played. A year in the system for everyone allows for great improvement, it took Stokes half of the year to figure out the college game. Now he has, that helps us tremendously.

Hopefully Fisher improves, and I think Pena will be even more of a beast.

This team will be better next year.

At 7:57 PM, April 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pete.... come on now.... run in the NCAA without Malcolm Grant? Not happening. There is no shot in hell we will make the big dance without "microwave". Villanova's TV dinner is forced to remain frozen.

Dare I say it! Yes I must we will not even reach the NIT without Malcolm next year. Everyone lets just keep our fingers crossed we get invited to the College Basketball Invitational (CIB).

Malcolm is GONE, lets not talk about him anymore. I already have my #3 Miami hurricanes jersey ordered, that little ordeal is behind us.

(1) Jay needs to recruit a bigman for next season w/ the 1 scholarship avail.

or

(2) Jay will have 5 OPEN scholarships to bring a whole new group in for Reynolds Senior yr. Fish/Stokes/pena's junior yr.

(hopefully he brings in a couple of guys taller than 6'7"

1. we have two open scholarships for next year.

2. according to vuhoops.com we just lost charles okwandu, a 7"1' nigerian center attending harcum college, to uconn today. bad day on the recruiting trail for us.

3. we might not have made the tourney without the lsu win- but we went to the sweet 16 without malcolm- hence we have everyone back from our sweet 16 team. this reminds me of the giants and jeremy shockey. he was one of their go-to guys until he got hurt and contributed to some of their wins, but they got better and won the super bowl without him.

4. if we land armwood and cheek for '09 we will be better off than if we had landed tyreke.

5. i am going to puke if pete mentions malcolm again.

You are without a doubt the saddest group of fans I have had the pleasure to run across on the internet.

A local 5 star recruit picks last season's runner-up over your school and its time to insult him, his school choice, the graduates of that school, the conference it plays in and the city it resides in.

Man, get a mirror and look in it. Aren't we talking about a high school kid, basketball and a pretty much afterthought of a basketball school on the national scene whose only claim to fame was a undeserved, cocaine induced, magical mystery championship a long, long time ago?

I HAVE BEEN A VILLANOVA FAN SINCE THE 1950'S, SO I TAKE A LONG VIEW OF THINGS.

IF JAY WRIGHT REALLY SAID WHAT HE IS ALLEGED TO HAVE SAID ABOVE HE WAS "WRIGHT" ON. IT'S LESS THAT EVEN MONEY THAT TYREKE WOULD START DAY ONE NEXT FALL; HE WILL MAY VERY WELL EVENTUALLY START.

IF THAT HAPPENED WITH A GUY THAT HAD THE EXPECTATIONS, REAL OR IMMAGINED, THAT TYREK HAS ITS BOUND TO CAUSE TEAM COHESIVNESS PROBLEMS WE DON'T NEED.

I THINK MAINTAINING THE TRAUDITION OF VILLANOVA BASKETBALL IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY ONE PLAYER, ONY ONE "W", AND MABY EVEN A CHAMPIONSHIP. IF WE ARE GOING TO WIN, LET'S DO IT THE "WRIGHT" WAY!

A GUY WITH A PRECONCIEVED "ONE AND DONE" ATTITUDE IS PROBABLY NOT DEDICATED TO A CAUSE GREATER THAT HIS OWN CAREER! THATS NOT VILLANOVA BASKETBALL.

At 9:30 AM, April 17, 2008, Blogger DaveNJ said...

And Memphis' claim to fame is their national championship in which year, exactly? Oh, that's right, you guys still ain't got one. Oh well, take some lessons from that '85 Nova team and learn how to shoot effectively, and maybe next year you guys won't choke at the FT line.

Jeeze, I was so whacked on coke, I can't remember who Nova beat in the 85 Semis....

Anyway, while I do agree that Tyreke's a good player, he's a better fit at Memphis. I trust jay totally, but I think the kid would have upset the chemistry that this current team seems to be building. And that's how Jay has the program going anyway.

Plus, it's apparent from the omnipresence of "Reggie," "Doc," "Pooh," "Mar Mar," "Dopey," "Sleepy," "Florida," "James" and "JJ" Evans, that Tyreke's got all the family anybody can handle. Enjoy you one year of Good Times UofM!

Go Cats!

As much as I wouldn't have minded Tyreke Evans enrolling at Villanova, does a one-and-done kid help the program long-term? I think with the team Villanova (Im no't going to say "we" because I don't play on it) has Tyreke would have opened the door to other BIG time recruits, look at scout.com how many schools who only want 4 year players lock down BIG recruits? and just how many of those schools who only want 4yr commitments win championships theese day? Tyreke would have made VU a lot of money in ticket sales and it would make it a lot easier to land recruits like U CONN, G TOWN, MEMPHIS, DUKE and UNC.. Please get over Malcom Grant I dont want to see him mentioned on this site again!!
