Tyreke to reveal college choice Wednesday

Tyreke Evans will announce where he will attend college at a press conference this Wednesday at 3 p.m.

The press conference will air live on both ESPNU and ESPNEWS.

Evans, a heavily recruited guard from Chester, Pa., is the top remaining unsigned prospect in the nation.

Tyreke's final decision among Memphis, Villanova, Texas, and UConn has been the subject of wild debate and speculation all season.

Recent rumors have been swirling around campus and the Internet that Memphis coach John Calipari has already received commitments from Evans and Devin Ebanks. The two players have openly discussed the possibility of enrolling at the same institution and becoming collegiate teammates.

While I must stress again this is only a rumor, it is the opinion of this blogger that Tyreke will most likely choose Memphis.

If Evans does not choose to play on the Main Line,  Villanova's staff can divert its full attention to Dominic Cheek, a top-5 shooting guard in the 2009 class.

Ay Pete! Here is a site of Joe Lunardi's early 64 team bracket for next year. He has us as a 5 seed, which is nice from him, but that says we are supposed to get knocked out in the second round, which was worse than this year. Anyway, big surprise we're not snubbed out of it and St. Joe's is a 1 seed.

Hi, Lip ---

Thanks for the link -- I don't think Lunardi is a very good bracketologist, so his April bracketology is not even newsworthy enough for my little blog.

I do think we will be better than a 5-seed.

I still think there is a decent chance Tyreke chooses Villanova -- he does not need WW Wes or Calipari to guide him to the NBA -- he is one and done anywhere he goes.

Why not stay close enough to home to enjoy his year at college?

Memphis is the favorite but I would not be shocked to hear Villanova's name called.

Don't hold out to much hope.. apparently we put the brakes on Tyreke a few months ago

Recent 'Anonymous' - We did not put on the 'brakes months ago'.. youhave no idea what you are talking about. Jay met with him a couple weeks ago. It is a 50/50 shot with Memphis.

I am just waiting for Memphis to get hit with recruiting violations. That whole link to WW Wes and how shady Calipari was in the past.. it is like watching "Blue Chips" all over again.

we have a scholarship open next year thanks to malcolm being gone. Why has there been no talk of Jay Wright recruiting a 7'2" huge guy in the middle to block shots.

Again, we got alley-oop'd off THE GLASS! without a bigman, its men vs boys again. You're all hyped up for "Guard-U" but what you dont realize is Frasier and Sheridans impact in the middle. Without a bigman, we might as well not show up at the tourney

I too am confused with us picking up King. What the hell do we need another 6'6 guard for? I know he is a shooter, but we have those already. We need a 7'7 center to punish the paint. Caseem's fragility, and lack in ability to alter the course of games, will haunt us come tournament time. And Cheeks? I hope is is coming in as Scottie leaves, otherwise we'll just take home a PA state championship. Take a lesson from Malcolm Grant: attack ad nauseam. Will a durable, imposing 7'8 center to sign with Nova-the same way Grant willed LSU back to the bayou.

"We need a 7'7'' center" --- Yeah, because 7'7'' players are really common.

Also, for bruiser -- we got alley ooped off the glass by brandon rush, who is a big guard, not a big man.

Extremely interesting articles about Calipari's "goodwill ambassador" to Memphis, William Wesley. He has steered DeJuan Wagner, Derrick Rose, and possibly Tyreke to Memphis.

Worth the reads if you have the time, seems like a really influential, but shady guy:

The only way you can get someone who is 7'7'' is if they had a pituitary tumor secreting growth hormone leading to gigantism. The only one of that size in the NCAA I can think of is Kenny George, who has gigantism. Even if by some miracle Jay was able to find and recruit such an oddity he probably wouldn't be agile enough to be good and suffer many knee and leg problems from playing basketball.

This center would be "durable and imposing." Not fragile and stiff. He would "punish" the paint.

If there is a will, there is a way.

If Tyreke goes to Memphis it will be yet another lapse of good judgment on his part. Calipari in addition to his apparent questionable ethics, showed himself to be less than a stellar bench coach at the end of the KU game.

I agree a big man is crucial to our recruiting efforts, and am a little confused why we don't even have a serious big-man prospect on our radar for the next couple years.

Whoever said we need someone that's 7'7" is off his rocker. Anything less than an 8-footer is just a waste of time in my book.

Worldwide Wes has this kid's ear... its a wrap.. memphis has him locked up.. you know for a south jersey dude, you think he would have more love for Jay Wright and Nova...

At 5:57 PM, April 15, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nova needs to get Charles Okwandu. He's 7'2" and from Nigeria. He played a bit last year at Harcum College down the road before some academic issues arose dealing with transfer credits form Nigeria or something like that. Word is that he's of the same Hasheem Thabeet mold.

six articles on google news say he's going to Memphis

At 9:33 PM, April 15, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

He has been going to Memphis for the past two months, but everybody thought I was crazy when I guaranteed it two months ago. Villanova is not even interested in him now. The first anonymous is correct.

That 7-2 guy could do wonders for us. I wish Jay would consider him. I'm interested in a pure center. We haven't had one of those for a long time.

It's cool Pete, who is a Lunardi guy anyway?

I think we've got a shot with Tyreke, everything seems to be lining up for Memphis, but it seems as though the guy is holding where he's going even from his family. So that says it's tough to listen to outside sources. If he smartens up, and sticks to loyalty his ours. It would be sad to see him go to the Memphis program.

Although its always nice to have extreme talent in the form of Evans, he comes with so much baggage. Who knows how that could affect the team, plus I feel like that might disturb whatever chemistry the team has now as far as guards go. I am in complete agreement as I'm sure everyone is that we need a big man, no guard no matter how good can make up for the lack of a big man. I also read the article about okawandu, we need to take advantage of this opportunity and get him ASAP.

Well, two articles on the front page of ESPN are 1) Rose is leaving for the NBA, and 2) Calipari just signed a contract extension. It seems that they timed these pretty perfectly to accomodate Tyreke.

If you are Tyreke where would you go?

Memphis - TV exposure, probably no returning guards to deal with, less strict academically, a coach who is a bit liberal with players, away from your posse/hanger-on's, etc...

Nova - Basically the direct opposite as Memphis.

I would love for Tyreke to be on the "Mainline" next year, but if I was in his shoes, Memphis here I come. I hope I am wrong.

At 10:05 AM, April 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

He is going to Memphis.. they way it is all lining up for him it is a no-brainer.. Rose and CDR leaving.. Cali's extension.. Worldwide Wes.. he wants to get out of Philthy... overall, its a shame cuz Nova would be the best choice for him personally and it would be sick to have him on that team.. but who loses playing time then?? reynolds, stokes or fisher?? would we run 4 guards all the time meaning Evans would be getting banged around as a PF?? buuut, those 4 guys on the floor together would be crazy... we would score at will..

At 10:09 AM, April 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

greg - I agree with a bunch of what you are saying.. except.. TV exposure.. Memphis didnt even get on TV until they were ranked #1 (the Tennessee game).. Nova was on ESPN a bunch of times, even before the Big East tourney and march madness.. nobody cares about Conference USA... it might as well be D2..

At 10:54 AM, April 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

the big east is much better prep for the NBA than crummy ol' C-USA

Check out www.cornellsun.com which is the newspaper for Cornell University. A freshman student there has written a very good article exposing Memphis as a sleazy program with a coach whose only interest is winning and hardly disciplines his players. Memphis has had a number of its players with criminal arrest records. Tyreke made a poor decision. Hopefully at some point the NCAA will catch up to Memphis and sanction their program.
