Reeling 'Cats head to Palestra for Hawks

Villanova will try to end its worst losing streak in four years tonight at the Palestra to play St. Joseph's University in the annual "holy war" grudge match.

The game will air on the CBS-owned CSTV network, which is available on the sports packages of DirecTV and Dish Network. Those of you without satellite dishes might want to head to a sports bar tonight.

Villanova, losers of four straight games for the first time since 2004, will look to improve to 4-0 this year in the Big Five Philadelphia city series. St. Joseph's will be playing for a quality out-of-conference win for its NCAA Tournament resume.

Villanova can clinch its third straight Big Five championship and a record 15th straight series win streak with a victory tonight.

For the first time in recent memory, and perhaps for the first time since its 2004 meeting with the #1 ranked Hawks, Villanova is an underdog in a Big 5 game. The host Hawks are a 4.5-point favorite over the slumping Wildcats.

Ken Pomeroy's statistical model predicts a 6-point loss for Villanova.

As rumors swirl around the Internet about a locker-room altercation between teammates and internal strife for the struggling Wildcats, a solid victory tonight would go a long way in easing team tensions.

Check out Villanova.com's official game preview and media notes (PDF) for tonight's match-up.

You may also predict the final score in the comments section below.

Two site-related notes: NovaFan09, the usual author of these gameday posts, will be back next game with his signature previews. The Syracuse game grades will be posted alongside the St. Joeseph's game grades after the game later tonight. (Didn't make much sense to post them as focus shifted to the Holy War.)

Correction: This post was updated to correct an error as to the game's location. The game was played at the Palestra, not on Hawk Hill. Let's Go Nova regrets the error.

I totally have not confirmed the factual accuracy.. I am just acknowledging the existence of these rumors, which I also received via IM.

Villanova 61 - St Joe's 60. FURTHER PREDICTION: In a disgusting display of damage control, Jay Wright will make a major deal about the importance of winning the Big Five "title".

additionally, i have had two sources confirm the report of a verbal and shoving match incident in the locker room after the loss against syracuse between corey stokes and scottie reynolds...apparently the incident started from a comment reynolds made after fouling out that stokes should have fouled his own self...this inner locker room drama is probably not a bad thing with how things have been going lately

I'm sorry but there is no way this team is that bad. Something incredibly odd is going on right now but I don't know what it is. There not this bad, there playing like a D-II school. Jay is throwing the games guys, he doesn't care he just wants to coach the sixers. He is pulling a Rich Rodriguez, at least Rodriguez lead his team to a good season.

So who do yo guys think will transfer this year. I say Fisher, Stokes and Scottie

At 9:34 PM, February 04, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All three of them probably dream of playing in the NBA. Transferring and sitting out a year ineligible, usually isn't a quick way to get there...

I haven't been able to see enough games this year cause very few have been televised where I am.

But can those who are pinning this mainly on Jay Wright please explain themselves? He's doing the same thing he's done in the past which we had lauded him for. Plus he's taken the right approach with the young team, they just don't respond with ANY intensity, ANY emotion.

The only thing I can blame Wright for is for wanting Shane Clark to play a leadership role. He is way too soft and way too removed from the game to be able to lead by example.

Seriously, what is going on here? I don't think its physically possible for a team to play this poorly. i just, dont know what to do or what to say. This leaves me at a loss for words. WHAT IS THIS? I don't know whats going on but someone needs to wake these guys up and let them realize how many people they're letting down.

I don't think its POSSIBLE for jay to coach them this badly. and i didnt think it was possible for them to play this badly. i know people have been degraded for saying this before, but at this point i dont think its absolutely ridiculous to say I, a short and out-of-shape teenaged girl, could play better than these guys. I don't think they're every really going to recover from this.

PS, PUT IN MALCOLM ALREADY $#!@&!!!! a player that good should not be playing 1 minute a game. this is absolutely ridiculous... I'm not a bandwagon fan, but what pride can i have for them?

You're all just spoiled. We never made the NCAA tournament once in my 4 years at the school.

Man up, deal with this terrible play. I'm sick of the comments about "how many people they are letting down." Give me a break, way too much self-entitlement around here.

I can't have pride on this team with the type of fans you are. This is why I'm glad I'm not from the Philly area, Philadelphia fans are disgusting. Root for your damn team... search for answers rather than degrade your own team. Stop whining, start cheering.

This game sucked, no doubt about it. But some of the comments here make me sick..

Villanova doesn't have a front court. The back court is then trying to hard to compensate for that and is failing miserable. Seriously look at the joke you guys call forwards.

Jay Wright needs to recruit players other than guards. He's had one decent forward in about five years and that was Sumpter.

Sorry Jameson but you know nothing about Villanovas history, I'd prefer you stick to you "Orange" rahter then talk about Nova because you sound like an idiot.

Also Jameson don't call Sumpter decent just because he toyed with your team year after year.
