Villanova heads to Syracuse for rematch

#12 Villanova (21-5) at #24 Syracuse (19-7)
1:00 p.m., 22 February 2009 at the Carrier Dome

TV: CBS

Line: Syracuse -2.5

If you didn't get a chance to read the Rutgers grades, which were recently posted, check them out here.

Villanova travels north to the Carrier Dome for a rematch today with a dangerous Syracuse team.

The Wildcats demolished the Orange two weeks ago at the Wachovia Center, and Syracuse will be looking to take revenge.

Syracuse is inching its way off the NCAA bubble and probably should be in at this point. The Orange are fresh off an overtime win against Georgetown last weekend, for a rare 8-day layoff in February.

KenPom predicts a 1-point Villanova win, with a 55 percent chance for a Villanova victory. That's a tad more optimistic for the Wildcats' chances than the sportsbooks have it, with most favoring the Orange by two-and-half points.

Check out the other four Villanova blogs linked at right for their more timely previews than this one.

Also, take your best shot at dethroning the reigning champion Mills by guessing the game's final score in the comments below.

Also, at half time, look for a drop of Jay Wright's hair gel to fall onto a crippled boy who then rises out of his wheelchair and kryptonite dunk over Villanova NCAA championship team member Joe "Joe Daddy" McDowell.

What does Fisher have to do to crack the starting lineup? Cure AIDS? Crawl up Mt. Everest? Solve a "unsolvable" math problem scrawled on a dry-erase board?

At 1:16 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

Fisher checks in, but for Reynolds, thereby negating much of the gain.

WHEN WILL WRIGHT LEARN TO PLAY THEM TOGETHER?

At 1:21 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

Stokes, Anderson, Redding, Fisher, Cunningham --

interesting lineup. I like it to give Scottie a little rest. But get Scottie and fish and stokes in there together = unstoppable.

At 1:23 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

And of course, as soon as I say that, in come Clark and Pena. Ugh.

At 1:26 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

And Fisher gets yanked out

At 1:32 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

Stokes and Fisher getting yanked in and out. This is horrible substituting by Wright. Let them stay in there to develop a groove.

At 1:38 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

And Reynolds comes in for Fisher. Total time spent on the court together: 0. Horrible. I know we are up by 7 now, but who knows how much we could have been up by if Reynolds and Fish played together?

7 points is NOTHING against Cuse at the dome. That can be gone in a second.

At 1:40 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

And Fisher back in... what is with all the yanking!

At 1:57 PM, February 22, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pete, your last 8 comments have been about substitutions despite the facts that we are WINNING at halftime. I thought we played fairly well in the first half, shutting down a healthy Onuaku by being scrappy.

At 1:58 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

I hope we can keep it up in the second half and pull out the win.

However, I think our lead could have been even bigger if Wright didn't yank our Fisher and Stokes like they were puppets on strings.

At 2:03 PM, February 22, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Absolutely beautiful play by Fish before the half. Exactly why I think he has earned the right to be our starting point guard. Completely shut down Flynn and then goes and gets the contact with 3 seconds left...

I also like stokes attitude... in a matter of seconds, and jacks up a three... he needs to have the mentality

This is getting too close

At 2:26 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

Clark and Cunningham are killing this team right now.

Dante needs to STOP SHOOTING. He is a bad shooter.

Clark just needs to take a seat. He is bad at all aspects of the game.

At 2:36 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

Fisher is playing so well. What a great save.

At 2:40 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

And the excellent hustle by Fisher gets him yanked out of the game... very nice, Jay. Especially when we were on a 13-5 run with him.

AND he just yanked Stokes out.

Wright sucks.

Fisher!!!!

um, where is scottie?

At 3:03 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

Fisher backdoor! Nice.

Jay's offense defense subbing SUCKS.

Leave Reynolds in.

At 3:04 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

nice preparation by Jay -- 3 turnovers in 4 syracuse presses so far

At 3:06 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

Good thing Clark is out there to shoot the free throws -- WTF?!

At 3:08 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

I cannot believe Wright is playing NEITHER point guard in the final minute, and we are giving up open threes and layups, and Clark is shooting our free throws.

It's like Wright does not understand basic end game basketball.

If you are up late in the game, you put your ballhandlers out there to break the pressure, and your free throw shooters out there to shoot free throws -- NOT THE OPPOSITE!

At 3:09 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

And both point guards come out yet again.

At 3:14 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

Wright escapes with the win despite his best effort to give away the game.

At 3:17 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger Pope of the Hardwoods said...

Did it ever occurr to you that you need "length" in defending a 3 pt shot to tie the game instead of 6'1" and 6'2"

At 3:17 PM, February 22, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Three looks to tie it for them, terrible press, breaking, and Scottie looked like a freshman guard... we are lucky to come out with a win

At 3:19 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger pete said...

Yeah, look how well the length did us -- 2 wide open looks for the three that just happened to rim out.

At 3:21 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger Pete @ LetsGoNova.com said...

Good win for the 'Cats. First good road win. We are a talented team.

A better coach would have closed out the game earlier, though.

Hehe, Pete, we are on to you now my man. This is IMO the best parody site on the internet. My only question is if/when you reveal the joke. I'm hoping never; that would spoil it. I realize if Nova, say, gets to the final four that will make it tougher to sustain, but look at it as a challenge. Heck, even if the some how win it all, I can see it now. "Nova wins national championship despite best efforts of their coach to give it away."

At 3:29 PM, February 22, 2009, Blogger Pope of the Hardwoods said...

Yeah,
Maybe 'Cuse rushed the shots because they were worried the length was about to recover and swat it away.

At 3:32 PM, February 22, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

a win is a win, they definately need to handle pressure better this reminded me of providence. But we just put syracuse away at 7-7 were 10-4 i cant complain. fisher is the truth as always.
GO CATS

Oh yeah, 3:22,

I have been maintaining the parody for three years now. you're onto me.

At 3:38 PM, February 22, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What the Hell was Wright thinking calling a timeout with 7/5 ticks to go in order to set up the DEFENSE?!?! He gave Boeheim a chance to set up the winning play!!!

At 3:42 PM, February 22, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice to see you sticking with it man. :) And indeed that kind of sustained effort is one of the keys to a successful parody site. (wink)

Another wrong prediction Pete. You just don't like this team do you?

At 4:17 PM, February 22, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

But one small piece of advice, Pete. I know it's a tough job to manage to sound deranged without sounding SO over the top that people figure out the joke. On the whole, you have done a masterful job of stiking the right balance. But the last two games, you have been so over the top that you risk giving the joke away. I mean, at least one person (me) has figured it out. (Incidently, it was the Frank Tchuisi comments which finally made me realize what was going on. As wonderfully demented as those comments were, they were just a little too much to be credible.)

At 4:35 PM, February 22, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm agreeing with 4:17. Pete, your comments about Frank's Rutger's game and this game as a whole really are comicable. At least a few others who post on this website speak normal, substantiated thoughts about Nova basketball to make this still an interesting read.

So to everyone else, BESIDES PETE, don't you think you dance with who brought you? I think the def/off substitutions at the end need to stop and you put the 5 best players, THAT DAY, on the court. You know who's hot and cold by the last two minutes of the game. If Clark shoots 50% FT for the season but is 4 for 4 on the day, then leave him in cause he's also a damn good rebounder. If Fish has hounded Flynn all day, then leave him in, who cares if he isn't 6'4"!!!

At 5:20 PM, February 22, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@Pete at 3:09..ever think he takes both PGs out so we'd have a better chance at rebounding? If you look at the stats:

http://kenpom.com/sr.php?team=Villanova

Scottie and Fish are both the worst in both Offensive and Defensive Rebound %. Some of that is because they both play PG so you don't get as many opportunities, but some of that is just the way they play.

And comments like @3:19 is what people get annoyed at you about. When you say because clearly Jay did something and it didn't work it must be wrong. I'd say that last 3 was wide open but the 1st 3 was block and the 2nd was badly off balance. So yeah, they did give a up a wide open 3, but I'm pretty sure bringing in your best rebounders, and your guys that have the most length to take get hands in the face of Syracuse's shooters was a good plan. The open three at the end was just an unlucky event, most of the time Nova would have had the rebound. It was a good process, it just had a bad outcome(that is, it was bad luck).

Pete "Dante needs to STOP SHOOTING. He is a bad shooter."

Dante is one of two players in the top 500 on Villanova in effective Field Goal %. Dante is 188
and Stokes is 224 according to kenpom.

Dante is a very good shooter.... I think Pete has gone insane from syphilis.

I avidly read this site and yet I have not read a single comment by Pete in months. I have just been enjoying everyone's comments. I recommend doing the same as Pete has some weird crazy man love thing going on for 6 foot black guys who score in bunches. He spends his weekends eerily staring outside the fence at Rucker Park. Pete...you are weird.

At 6:44 PM, February 22, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

There is no doubt that Pete has become so anti-Wright it is tough to take him seriously. I agree that Fish should get more playing time, and I don't agree with a bunch of Jay's coaching moves, but a win is a win and seriously how are you going to whine so much when your team has won 8 out of the last 9, including a victory over Pitt, who is about to be named #1 in the country for the 2nd time this year. GO CATS!!!

At 7:02 PM, February 22, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pete,

I have to say that you are correct that Nova needs to go with a smaller lineup. You just can't win in the college game with a team of lumbering big men like they have now. But you don't go far enough.

It's true that they had their greatest success with a 4 guard lineup a couple of years ago, but why stop at 4? A five guard lineup is clearly the way to go. Maybe they don't have the personel for it this year (if only they still had Malcolm!), but maybe next year? Reynolds, Fisher, Stokes, Cheek and Wayns.

Pete...as a relatively new reader to your blog I get the impression that you've only been around for the last 4 20+ win years. You should really get a reality check and realize that except for a few times in the last 35 years we have not had this level of success. We all get frustrated by a turnover here and there on an in-bounds play or Jay coaching one way or another but you need to get real and understand we've got a very good thing going for the last 8 years. Another way of saying this is to be careful what you ask for -- as the day will again come when Jay will be courted by the likes of Maryland, Georgia Tech, Duke, NC, Kentucky, etc. and we'll be left to figure out our future again.

What motivates you to perpetuate this fraud?, I mean blog!

1. Extra credit for an abnormal psych class?
2. You want to impress your mother and father and/or legions of fans? (Hezikiah and Matthew et al)?
3.You want to build your resume to land a coveted Fox News Job?
4.You're really not Pete, you're Steve Lapis' son.
5.You're Fred Hill's son?

Need you to shed some light Pete.

At 6:36 PM, February 23, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

re 7:02 p.m., that's why even Pete gives Wright too much credit for his recruiting. Instead of wasting recruiting resources on bigs like Cunningham or Yarou (heck, even Cheek is a towering 6'6"!), he needs to recruit more guards under 6'2", so Nova WILL have the personel for a 5 guard lineup, even in years when they lose through injury or transfer someone like Grant.

This site is completely bogus and Pete provides only comical value in a pathetic sort of way. Just stopped by to see if he is still howling at the moon. We are #10 in the country. Could you imagine how good we would be if we had Pete at the helm. Give us a break Pete.
