Villanova faces slumping G'town

#10 Villanova (23-5) vs. Georgetown (14-12)
12:00 p.m., 28 February 2009 at the Wachovia Center.

TV: ESPN

Line: Villanova -5.5

Villanova faces what may be its most unusual opponent of the season Saturday afternoon with a game against the mysterious Georgetown Hoyas.

Georgetown comes into Philadelphia having dropped nine of its last 11 games, but none of these have been terrible losses. The Hoyas boast wins over two likely #1 seeds, with victories over UConn and Memphis, and a solid win over NCAA-bound Syracuse.

Georgetown has also beaten two NCAA bubble teams, Providence, and Maryland.

Despite all the good wins, Georgetown is not even in bubble consideration for the NCAA tournament, thanks to its recent losing ways. Georgetown has won just two of its last 11 games, beating Big East doormats Rutgers and South Florida.

None of the losses were that bad individually, but when taken in context of one another, they probably will spell N-I-T unless the Hoyas can make a ridiculous run in the Big East tournament, a la Syracuse in 2006.

KenPom predicts a four-point Villanova win, with a 68 percent chance of victory.

Check out the previews on the other 'Nova blogs (linked in the right sidebar), and then predict the game's final score in the comments below.

LOL. I just knew you'd have us losing this game. Incredible.

It's been nothing but negative this entire week on LGN. It's been building up to your prediction of a home loss to GTown. I love how when Nova is on top of the world, the site updates crawl. A few close calls and I cannot even keep up with the site updates.

Also, your game prediction here repeats itself over and over. GTown lost 9 of its last 11. GTown won 2 of its last 11. Thanks for that. None of the losses have been that bad x2. Thanks for that.

Why shouldn't I predict a loss if I think they're going to lose? The idea is to predict the game's outcome, not to only predict wins.

If we do lose, can I expect an apology?

And wow, nice personal attack Pete. I should just become an anon, I'm clearly a lightning rod for you.

No, you should become an anon because your bullshit ridiculous theory that I update the site more when the team is not doing well is making you look bad.

I hate the fact that Wright yanks Fisher out whenever he makes one mistake. If he did that to the rest of his players, there'd be no one on the court.

HA HA HA HA Jay "Coach of the Year" Wright didn't remind his team the shot clock was running down during the timeout HA HA HA HA HA that wouldn't play in Biddy Basketball.

Wright was able to score on that drive because there was no one fast enough to keep up with him because Jay put both Reynolds and Fisher on the bench for "defense" at the end of the game.

What the hell is Redding doing handling the ball like that with us down 3 at the end of the game? Nice job throwing it away, Redding.

And then Wright doesn't even put Fisher out there for the last possession, down 3 with 30 seconds left -- nice move Jay

those last two possessions conclusively prove that Jay Wright is a terrible end-of-game coach. wow

I've been saying for the entire year that Wright's end-game blunders would cost us a big one -- now that day is here.

Can anyone say that this loss wasn't totally Wright's fault? I would LOVE to hear that argument.

the shot clock violation and the third- and second-to-last possessions were absolutely embarrassing. jay should apologize to the fans. that was a total joke.

#14 -- totally agree, I am glad someone FINALLY recognizes what I've been saying all year.

And what a way to end the game -- can't even foul GT in 3.5 seconds? Nice diagramming in the timeout, Jay! You know why we couldn't get to Wright? Because both our point guards were on the bench. There was no speed.

Who would have thought GT would have given the ball to its point guard there?

And what if we got a turnover? There was no one there but Stokes to shoot the shot. Was Jay going to call a timeout with 1 second left? HA!

Corey "Chokes" Stokes is to be blamed just as much a Jay Wright for the loss. WTF was with that off balanced prayer and not being able to make a WIDE OPEN THREE when he is supposed to be one of the best shooters in the country?

Gregg, see my comments in the new post above.

I dont blame Stokes for taking that three because there was no play being run! And Fisher was on the bench! Someone had to take a shot, as 15 seconds had already elapsed.

Haha, I deleted the comment because I lost my temper. Everyone else is free to delete his or her own comments they regret, as well.

IMKL, how can you compare one bad play by Fisher in the first half to an entire end-game of poor coaching decisions spanning 5-10 possessions? That's like comparing an argument with your friend to world war II.

At 2:43 PM, February 28, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They were all terrible plays. My point wasn't to compare, but not to lose sight of the stupid play to end the 1st half.

Wish Stokes knocked down both FTs to tie it up at 52. That would've created a whole different scenario.

Play was way too physical in this game IMO, even for a Big East game. Not sure that should've been a disadvantage for us, but it doesn't seem like anyone on Nova played particularly strong with the ball, or adapted to the refs.

All in all, a terrible job getting Dante only 7 looks. Monroe was out much of the latter half of the 2nd, Dante should've been able to get his.

fisher was a mess at the end of the first half. a turnover or two and the decision to push it instead of holding for one really cost us. the turnovers are fisher's fault alone. failing to hold for one is part his fault and part Wright's. Wright should be screaming "One Shot! One shot!" at the top of his lungs, and they should have covered that scenario in practice enough times for Fisher to know not to shoot with 9 secs left. That sequence indeed came back to haunt us.
